A Warning From Health Canada

For the safety of your baby certain precautions should be taken when using a baby nest, as with any other product. The nest should be used independently and should not be placed within or on top of cradles, cribs, playpens or bassinets.
Health Canada recommends parents to not leave their babies unattended and be mindful of their sleeping surfaces and sleeping positions. Irregular and soft materials such as water beds, inflatable mattresses, couches and beds are not recommended for sleeping babies as they can raise the chances of suffocation. For this reason, baby nests should not be placed on these surfaces either.
You can additionally minimize risk by ensuring that your baby sleeps on their back, as opposed to their stomach or side, and sleeps by themselves in a safe cradle, bassinet or crib.

Sleeping Products for Babies: What to Consider

Sleeping surface: The sleeping surface for a baby should be level and stable. Pillows, padding and surfaces that sink in under body weight should be avoided and firm, solid sleeping products should be used instead.

Hazards: Sleeping products with ropes, ribbons and strings should be avoided since they can pose the threat of strangling. Likewise, sleeping products with large open spaces and holes between bars should be avoided due to the possibility of the baby accidentally falling out.

Sufficient space: Babies should always sleep alone. Sharing their sleeping space is a safety threat due to the possibility of suffocation and getting trapped under another’s weight. Health Canada recommends babies sleep in a space separate from their parents’ or sibling’s bed. However, room sharing is encouraged provided the baby sleeps in their own crib. Room sharing is a positive alternative to bed sharing and has shown to minimize chances of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
